How to Calculate Nutrition Per Serve (Even Without a Label)

No label? No problem. Learn how to add up ingredient values, divide by servings, and adjust for portion size to estimate nutrition per serve.

Sometimes you cook meals from scratch or use ingredients without nutrition labels. In these cases, calculating nutrition per serve is still possible using basic principles.

Start by identifying the main components of the meal — protein, carbohydrates, fats, and vegetables. Look up the nutrition values for each ingredient using reliable sources such as government food databases. Add the totals together to get the nutrition for the entire recipe.

Next, divide the total by the number of servings. If the recipe makes four portions, divide each nutrient by four. This gives you the nutrition per serve.

Portion size matters. If you eat more or less than the intended serving, adjust the values accordingly. For example, eating 1.5 servings means multiplying each nutrient by 1.5.

Tools like RecipeMaths simplify this process by letting you enter ingredient values and automatically calculating per-serve nutrition. Even without labels, you can get a clear picture of what’s in your meal.
