How to Convert Between Cups, Grams, and Milliliters Easily

- Cups measure volume, but inconsistently
For water and thin liquids, 1 cup equals 240ml, and 240ml weighs 240g. But for flour, sugar, rice, oats, and other dry ingredients, the weight changes depending on how tightly the cup is packed. One cup of flour can vary from 110g to 150g depending on technique.
This is why professional bakers prefer grams — they’re precise. If a recipe uses cups and you want accuracy, converting to grams is the best approach. Many ingredient conversion charts exist, but using a digital scale is the most reliable method.
